We ❤️ Independents at Big Heart Swansea
Jun 30, 2021
We support independents all year around at Big Heart Swansea, but July is officially Independent Retailer Month – which is celebrated, globally. It’s a month to highlight the positive, social and economic impact that independents have on society.
We’re lucky in Swansea as we have so many wonderful, local businesses right in the heart of the city. From great restaurants, cafes and bars to fantastic shops and service providers– making it as easy as possible to opt-for local.
To help you maximise your support, we’ve compiled our ‘Top 10 Tips for supporting Independents’ below:
Think twice before you buy
Online shopping is convenient, there is no denying that. However, before you click to purchase something from a large brand, why not spend a couple of minutes researching for local equivalents? Some local businesses can even deliver straight to your door before larger businesses can. You will often have direct access to the business owners too- there’s nothing like a personal touch.
Like it? Share it!
You can’t underestimate the power of sharing something on social media. If you have a great experience or love a product from a local business, take a photo or video and share it across your social media channels. The fact that you go out of your way to capture and share a photo, speaks volumes. It will put a spotlight on a local business that can really benefit from your support and brand advocacy.
Follow, like, comment, save and share
As well as sharing your own personal experiences, there’s no better way to share the word about a business, than sharing / liking / commenting on their posts across social media. It will have a huge impact on post engagement numbers and will, in turn, result in more followers and more customers.
The power of positivity
So many people like using free review platforms, such as TripAdvisor and Google Reviews to share negative experiences, in the heat of the moment. But why not flip it on its head. If you’ve had a great experience with a local business, take two minutes to write your review. You’ll be surprised how much of an impact it will have on a business. It’s reported that 93% of people read reviews before visiting a business or buying a product. It’s time to spread some positivity.
As well as sharing great experiences online, talking about experiences to friends and family is also a great way to promote independents. Is someone you know thinking of buying a product from a big, national? Remind them of that local business you know.
No-shows = a no-go
Booked a meal at your favourite restaurant, but you need to change your plans? Drop them a line to let them know you won’t need the table any longer. Businesses lose so much money down to no-shows, especially during the pandemic. They’ve already had to reduce capacity numbers for social distancing purposes, so failing to turn up with no warning, makes things even worse. Give them an opportunity to open up your table to other customers.
Don’t forget to tip
If you’ve enjoyed a great meal out, don’t forget to tip. Show your gratitude for the excellent service you’ve experienced. It goes a long way.
A huge number of independents offer their own gift cards. Treat someone to a gift card from a local business – it will feel far more thoughtful than a gift card from a national, ‘catch-all’ retailer.
Sign up to newsletters
You may not think this is a big way to support but building up a database for businesses is so important. It enables them to contact customers directly, when new products are launched or new offers are available. If you see a ‘sign up to our newsletter’ link – sign up.
