Small Business Saturday: Supporting Independents in Swansea
Nov 27, 2019

“When you shop small, you are backing the small businesses that strengthen and diversify our communities.” – Elizabeth Rutledge, Chief Marketing Officer at American Express
As we head into the festive period, television, radio, and social media are awash with campaigns to shop local and support small, independent businesses. Visa are once again running the #WhereYouShopMatters campaign, urging shoppers to show their local high street some love this Christmas, and Small Business Saturday is right around the corner; Saturday 7th December to be exact!
Small Business Saturday originated in the US in 2010, created by avid champion of the UK high street American Express. Now in its seventh year in the UK, the campaign has grown significantly each year with an estimated £812m spent in small businesses across the UK on 2018’s Small Business Saturday – an 8% increase on last year. American Express continues to be the Principal Supporter of the UK campaign through this success.
We’re incredibly lucky to have hundreds of small, independent businesses on our doorstep in Swansea, from the City Centre’s family-run grocers, butchers and bakers, to its fashion outlets and food and drink spots. By shopping, visiting or eating and drinking in an independent in Swansea, you’re helping our community to thrive. You’re also supporting local employment, local entrepreneurship and businesses, which help gives Swansea City Centre its individuality and unique charm.
Want to help support Swansea’s small businesses in other ways too? Tell a friend about your favourite independent shop or suggest grabbing a bite to eat at your local café. If you’re active on social media, just liking their posts, tagging friends and leaving positive reviews can all help make a difference!
When you support a small business, you’re supporting a businessperson’s dream, and for every £1 spent with a small business in Swansea City Centre, 63p stays in the local economy. Every purchase creates a positive impact – it’s a win–win situation! Visit our bright and diverse city centre next Saturday and support our High Street by “shopping small” and buying something special for your loved ones this Christmas.
Don’t forget our £3 for 3 hours, £4 for 4 hours, and £5 for 5 hours parking offer at St David’s Multi Storey Car Park, and FREE parking every Sunday at all City Centre Council Car Parks.
